First off the clouds. This is the first time that I have ever hand painted clouds rather than rely on various filters and the flamingpear.com plugin 'glitterato'. It took me 4 attempts to get what you see here. Then the metals, especially the disks on his chest and the way they reflect everything around them. I'll never look at metal the same way again I think. Then painting the rim lighting and painting OVER the lineart whereas up until now I've only ever really done glows and a few colour holds on pictures. And grass!!! Layers and layers of grass!...! Gah!

Anyway heaps of fun overall

Ok so what have I been up to in the past month or so..?

Besides it being exam time and meaning that I have bucket loads of marking to do (bleah...), I've been getting these school mascots designed for the different houses/factions of the new school where I teach, following the success of a similar project last year at my old school.

They are:

Owen Phoenix
Sanderson Apes
Weston Wolves
and Wallis Tigers

The names (owen, sanderson etc) are the names of the original pioneers/settlers in the region. Boring as hell I know but we're stuck with them...

But the kids themselves chose the animal characters in a school competition

pencils and inks by randy kintz again

They'll now be used on all sorts of school publications starting with some 3 metre high banners of each character up on the wall of the gym, as well as flags, t-shirts, mousepads, mugs, desktop wallpapers... well anywhere we can think of actually.

As it was I must have done her skin areas at least 6 - 8 times before finally getting it right and even then only after I asked Raul Trevino for some pointers and hints!!!. The rest all just came standard and easy to do, but that skin on Storm must have consumed at least 10 hours!
Just a quickie commission I got paid to do (yay me!)

It's a simple portrait for promos/posters/submissions. He's a teacher to the blind by day, and super hero by night (aren't they all?) His special power is his metal-silver eyes that cause people to see the deepest darkest nastiest side of their inner selves - permanently, so he has to wear super dark sunglasses all the time. Kinda like X-men Cyclops but nastier and with less ruby coloured death rays!
If people are wondering who this wolalina character is and why she always looks different, then she's a time travelling detective from the 21st century and so she dresses in whatever period/era and location that she finds herself.

In this one she's found herself in the US war of independence but as she's from the 21st century she's also passing herself off as a kind of super-hero (due to her greater technology) and so she's ripped ideas off zorro and captain america - which explains the mask and shield... go figure...
Wolalina concept developed by Daniel Kakunen.
inks by Tom Schloendorn
Colour by ME!

As i was working on this I became aware that there were quite a few things wrong with the picture itself. Firstly the upper hand is around the wrong way, and otherwise the light direction as indicated by the B&W inks keeps changing. Top left on the upper rock, center right halfway down and then from behind the characters by the time you get to the bottom rocks! Added that "barf-boy" has no indicated light direction at all... and it made for an interesting exercise!!

At least I'm happy with the colour combinations and how they came out and I covered the light source issues as best I could.
Not 100% happy with the girl and the chipmunk but the rest seems ok to me... btw, if I never have to colour another sunflower again I'll be happy. :P
