I was colouring away on another picture when I looked at it and saw that it was going to be the what...?... 10th picture out of the last 15 or so that I've done that was going to be basically desaturated green/orange/yellow as a colour scheme.

Ok, so deciding to put that aside for now, I went looking through my lineart stash and decided to do this one simply to give myself a kick up the arse and do a highly saturated, non-green/orange/yellow picture!! - so here it is. Nothing fancy, just trying to get myself out of a rut...!

Squeezing this one inbetween other paid stuff (gee can I tell it must be con season and SDCC is coming up? - everyone wants me to colour their samples pages/covers/pinups/whatever at present it seems! :P ) Anyway, Art sent me the highres to this one to have a play with after I did a Captain Action picture/poster for him a while back. It's not a patch on the original colours done by Snakebite but was fun to do.

So Eric posted this on his deviantart gallery as a high res pencils for people to have fun with to ink or to colour... so here's my efforts on the colours! It was all going pretty much standard with spooky blues and reds etc and then I accidently bumped the hue slider to 180 and it all went greeny-grey!!... I went WOW! - and ta-dahh, here it is!

Man, talk about fiddling with this one! The original colours many years ago were with a pink background and so I decided to go with green just to be different! I was struggling to find a way to bring out both spidey and wolverine equally at the same time and everything I tried was swallowing one or the other. Guess that green idea went by the board then didn't it!?... :P

Fan art pencils by Rosame Gregorio who sent me the high res (how nice of her) and which I then had to get inked. Took me a while to get someone to do so but eventually Tom Schloendorn did it for me.

So to the colours! - I mucked around for ages on the skintones of Aphrodite alone. The magenta jet bike is what it was coloured like in the original comic so I was kinda stuck with that, but the rest came out nicely IMO with the complementary greens etc.

So all in all, a bit of a saga to get it done but I'm pretty happy with the end result!

As i was working on this I became aware that there were quite a few things wrong with the picture itself. Firstly the upper hand is around the wrong way, and otherwise the light direction as indicated by the B&W inks keeps changing. Top left on the upper rock, center right halfway down and then from behind the characters by the time you get to the bottom rocks! Added that "barf-boy" has no indicated light direction at all... and it made for an interesting exercise!!

At least I'm happy with the colour combinations and how they came out and I covered the light source issues as best I could.

So, Tim Townsend has a new deviantart gallery and is uploading all sorts of large sized and mostly high res goodness, so I did this one while I wait for some (paid gig!!) artwork for a children's book to come in...

Mark Brooks (penciller) posted the high res on his DeviantArt gallery and invited everyone to have a go at it - so here's mine.

Had to work on it inbetween some PAID work!! (which I'm not allowed to show yet on forums etc until after NYCC) - yay me!! - so that's why it's been a while between posts.

Not 100% happy with the girl and the chipmunk but the rest seems ok to me... btw, if I never have to colour another sunflower again I'll be happy. :P

and now I get to move onto colouring about 12 character pictures for a children's book and accompanying website - again paid work - so yay me again...

After doing 7 blue-based pictures out of my last 11 pictures I deliberately avoided using that colour in this picture, just for the heck if it. I kept having flashbacks of the "My Name is Earl" TV show doing this one! :P (except that show has less ninjas...)

First coloured pic after spending two weeks marking year 11 and 12 geography exams. (yay - yep, I know what I'd *rather* be doing!) so this was kinda like the cupcake sitting on the top of the treadmill.

This was a test/sample piece drawn by Steve Firchow a few years ago (inked by Joe Weems) and he sent me the master high res B&W file to have a play with! So anyway, here's my take on the picture. I like his style of inks - lots of big black areas so you can get lazy with the gradients as it still looks good with big swipes of colour!

I had fun trying to get the glow under his boots right and eventually just used some fractal pictures, with their colours adjusted to overlay is as a texture file. Gave a nifty effect.

I got the high res off Tom Shoendorn who did the inking for this one and so gave it some colours on a slow Sunday afternoon last week. Pencils are originally by Francis J Manupal. The lighting was kinda tricky what with the flames and the overall upward facing light source. I ultmately got my daughter to do the kids 'spooky' tricky of shining a torch into her face so I could check how the light played onto her face!

Jesus Salas (macuy19 at deviantart.com sent me the original high res inks to this one to have some fun with. Pencils are by Juan Lopez (mistermoster at deviantart.com). I was trying to get a 1930's feel for the whole image. You know, that nice sepia sort of colour that they had in the movie of the Rocketeer.

Apparently Dave Stevens (creator of the Rocketeer) has also seen this and loves it! Yay me! (So do Jesus and Juan by the way!)

To answer some common questions asked elsewhere: Background is a bunch of layers with different settings using the glitteratto plugin from flamingpear.com set to screen mode combined with a bunch of gradient layers set to multiply to give it some depth. came ou nicely IMO. The smoke trail is just some squiggles with the paintbrush in photoshop, and a some smudging.

I've gotta WACOM!!!! I did about half (can you tell which parts?) of this picture with my brand spanking new wacom tablet and I tell you now they are tricky things to get used to using. (anyone got any tips?...? )
This is another B&W image sent to me by Steve Firchow the original colourist and I've gone and put my slant on it. This one was drawn by Trevor Hairsine.
